From Jumilhac Le Grand the Limousin town of St Yrieix (the shortened form by
which it is locally known) is just 15 kms away, taking the D78 and then the
D18. It is a particularly pleasant drive with wonderful country views and, for
the gardening enthusiast, homes with gardens a blaze of colour during the summer
months. St Yrieix has a large market every second and fourth Friday of the month
and for those people interested in farming, just outside the town (on the route
to Limoges, D704) there is a large livestock market, held on Fridays. There
are shops in the town selling Limoges china at very reasonable prices. Good
every day use articles, as well as a range of gift items. On the route to Limoges
there is a lovely recreational lake and a nice restaurant at the lake side.
During the summer months the town plays hosts to visiting musicians and there
are always recitals and concerts in the church or theatre. Many are free to
attend. Look out for posters advertising events.
