The Coste family who own the stables at Jumilhac Le Grand, shown in the photos above, now also own the stables and equestrian complex at St Yrieix La Peche and it’s from there they now offer stabling facilities, riding lessons and a ride can be booked.
Also well worth visiting is the The National Stud headquarters at Pompadour, about an hour’s drive and you can also visit the stables. On race days it’s a good day out. Take a picnic lunch. It’s a lovely course.
For a memorable afternoon visit the Brantome Police Horses located not far from Brantome. This is a family run sanctuary for retired Metropolitan Police horses. Rowland talks you through a multi-media presentation and then you get to meet the horses and learn some of their history, followed by a scrumptious cream tea with homemade scones and cake made by Alison and her band of helpers. It’s a lovely atmosphere and great experience. They do get booked up and are only open to the public two afternoons a week in the summer, so it’s advisable to book ahead. www.brantomepolicehorses.com Telephone (0033)(0)5 53 05 86 80.
