Dordogne Cottage Reviews - Comments from Owner Guestbook

Cyril Marissal. Tres belle endroit. Je vous recommande La Masion Jaune en famille ou entre amis.

Mike and Marie Smith …………………………………….Once again thanks for your hospitality, take care of yourselves.

Alan & Barbara Disbrowe Thank you for your kind message, we all enjoyed our final days before leaving for home. We hope that all have a really good summer.

Louise & Nick Pettingell. First off – thank you for a fab holiday – it seems like a while ago now but we are still feeling the benefit.  We were so lucky with the weather.……………………..Love to you both and again our thanks for a wonderful holiday.

Coline L. Maison très cosy auprès du lac avec tout l'équipement nécessaire sur place et les bons conseils de Gaynor. Pêche, barbecue et pleine vue sur la campagne, un moment très agréable en famille!

Samantha & Darren Young. Thank you for letting us stay again we had a perfect time in such a great setting.  Can’t believe it is over and back to the madness of life at home and work.  .Take care and love to you both, and sure we will be in touch and see you again.

Peter & Jeremy Merkli. This was our 10th year of staying at la Maison Jaune and it does very much feel like home to home. There is always a welcoming feel when you arrive with freshly cut flowers, a nice bottle of local wine and of course milk in the fridge. No need to rush to the supermarket - the relaxation starts from the moment you arrive! We always go straight down to the lake which immediately makes you feel relaxed and a real feeling of being on holiday. St Priest les Fugeres which is located in the heart of the Périgord-Limousin Natural Regional Park is a great base to explore and see the many sights across the region with too many to mention.  Even after all of this time of coming we always get to see new sights and places. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay this time again and most notably enjoyed the Lascaux IV cave paintings at Montignac. Thank you again Gaynor and Vic for being such lovely hosts - till next year!

Pauline & Frank Connolly. You and Vic should be very proud of what you both have achieved, I can understand why people keep coming back if it’s only to reconnect with you both.  Stay safe , keep well and keep on swimming.Love and best wishes to you both.

3rd visit and getting better

Well it has really become home from home, you know that as you get closer you remember the roads the villages and all the memories come flooding back. This happens for us around Chalus (where Richard the lionheart met his demise) driving down the long country road you can feel the weariness drain away as you look forward to another great week away.
Do we ever get bored going back to the same tranquil spot? no no no the sound of birds crickets and frogs is the only noise we need.
The village has got even better due to the small but friendly pub which has opened and its very dog friendly staff.
We are just starting to scratch the surface of this beautiful area and are looking forward to next year.
The welcome we get from Gaynor and Victor is warm and more like friends than gite guests, Victor cooks a lovely curry and it’s not to be missed. Loved my lazy days by the lake reading and swimming with the dog.
So if you want peace, tranquility and time to relax this is the place for you, your family and your dog, they'll love it

Though it already feels further away than it should the holiday was lovely and we think and talk very fondly of our time there. It was a perfect mixture of everything – just too short!

Thanks to you and Victor for being such excellent hosts, and lovely people!

Jeremy & Peter Merkli May 2018

As always we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and managed to see some new places even after so many times of coming. Looking already forward to coming again in September. Thank you again for the lovely evening. We very much enjoyed our time with you.

Louise and Nick Pettingell

As always, a huge thank you for making sure we had a wonderfully restful holiday. Our evenings with you are always special  We have already been having a think about next year. And will get and get back to you as soon as we can. Many thanks again for another wonderful holiday – I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and get enough time to sit and enjoy.

Ian & Julia Bragg & family

………..we had a fabulous, relaxing stay with you and loved the region. You were perfect hosts and I hope  the rest of the season goes well for you. Orla and Hobbes are very upset we don’t have a lake for a daily dip – they’ll have to make do with the local canal!

Mike & Marie Smith

August 19th -Thanks again for everything and we look forward to seeing you both again before too long.

September 7th -We are booking our trip to Spain for next year and are thinking of driving back through France and stopping off at a little Cottage we know in a little village near La Coquille in the Dordogne!! Do you have availability for 2 weeks commencing 11 May 2019 ?

Lynn & Tom Jowitt

'Fabulous setting! So peaceful with very accommodating (nothing is too much trouble) owners just down the road. Oliver our dog was delighted if he had to keep Vic and Gaynor company whilst we went out for the day. Thank you both so much! The cottage was a great place to stay although the lake was a little further from the cottage than anticipated BUT where else do you get you own private lake to swim in!

It was fantastic! Days out followed by an evening BBQ back at the gorgeous cottage in our private garden. A fabulous getaway! And one more thing... Try a dinner at Vic and Gaynor's... Amazing hosts, great food and an evening to remember!'

Jeremy & Peter Merkli – September 2018

We arrived safely back home at around 10pm last night after a very good run up to Calais. The doggies travelled well and as always were as good as gold.

We had a lovely time again with you and thoroughly enjoyed the evening with you both last Thursday.

Christine, Michael and Chris Skinner

Having recently returned from a very enjoyable and relaxing stay in your lovely cottage we want to thank you for a great holiday and for your wonderful hospitality.

La Maison Jaune is delightful,  a charming old cottage complete with wooden beams and full of character.   On arrival we received a very warm welcome from Gaynor and Victor who also provided us with a delicious meal and a lovely evening spent on their beautiful terrace.  La Maison Jaune is a delightful and  charming old cottage, complete with wooden beams and well equipped with everything we could have needed for our stay.  It is full of character and surrounded by a spacious garden with open views of the countryside.  The crowning glory to the cottage is the beautiful private lake complete with a little boat and jetty for fishing and swimming and a Barbeque area.  The lake is in a secluded and tranquil setting and is a real haven for the local wildlife, a wonderful place to relax and unwind and we took full advantage of it!

The village is a short walk from the cottage and the local boulangerie is not to be missed;  their freshly baked croissants became a 'must' for our breakfast every day.  We also had a very nice evening meal in the little village bar/restaurant and found several good restaurants and a pizzeria in the little town of La Coquille just 2kms away.

The cottage is ideally situated for sightseeing and exploring the beautiful Dordogne region with many beautiful and historic typically French towns and villages nearby, some with  typically French street markets. There are some amazing caves nearby, some chateaux and even a huge lake with swimming beaches and a lakeside cafe and restaurant.  Gaynor and Victor also recommended a local attraction, the Brantome Police Horses.  This is a retirement home for some of the Metropolitan Police horses, set on a lovely farm in the countryside. We spent a wonderful afternoon there which included a delicious cream tea. Well worth a visit.

Many thanks, again to Victor and Gaynor for a great holiday - we will be back!

Jan & John Anderson

Well, where to start!  This was our first experience of staying in a gite, and what a truly fabulous time we had.

My husband and I arrived with our two dogs, not really knowing what to expect, but Gaynor made us very welcome from the outset. The garden was large enough and very secure for the dogs, and the lake and surrounding area just perfect for exercising them.  Everything we could possibly have needed was provided for, the kitchen was very well equipped, and the living room area very comfortable and in keeping with the French style, (although we didn't spend much time indoors), books, jigsaws, dvd's and cd's were also provided.  The information pack supplied by Gaynor was substantial, just proving her love and in depth knowledge of the area.

Nothing was a problem for either Gaynor or Victor, always helpful and on hand, even providing radiators (end of September) when they thought it was turning chilly - however we're Northerners and can withstand slight dips in temperature!  The gite is within walking distance of the village which has a boulangerie/convenience store - we can recommend the baguette avec jambon of which we had several.  The bar/restaurant is very convenient and affordable, providing lunch and evening meals.

It's a lovely area and very convenient for day trips, and a plethora of information is provided at the gite.

This was such a relaxing holiday that we knew within a couple of days that we were going to  be extending our stay, and returning in the Spring (and this is already in place)!  Thank you Gaynor and Victor.

Myriamme Dolder – Belgium

I had so many energy when I leaved my French Paradise that I never took a sleep on the way home.  Can you imagine.

I can only dream for May next year.

George & Lizzie Firth

We fully enjoyed the week relaxing at your beautiful gite with its tranquil setting and wonderful lake. Many fond memories were made many miles were walked (Maisie and Lizzy need rehab)and many many smiles were had.

We have already had the conversation ref next year if not sooner and seeds are planted.

Kim & Sean Rogers

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you and had a great relaxing holiday.
So much so can we pencil in the 2 weeks after the Dutch group for 2018?

Greg Mclafferty

All back home and safe after a good journey back with plenty of laughs reminiscing about a fantastic week at your beautiful cottage in France. I can’t thank you enough for the hospitality and the relaxed nature that you run the business, it truly was one of the best holidays that we have all had . We most certainly want to return next year and for longer and with a new addition of a bar in the village it will be great meeting more of the locals over a bottle or two.

Once again Thank You for letting us stay I will be in touch very soon to arrange dates for next year’s visit, well depending if you can put up with us crazy bunch for even longer J!!

Stephanie Rochas

Nous garderons un excellent souvenir de votre beau cottage et de son lac.

Samantha & Darren Young

Just a quick email to say thanks again we had a great time and hope to return and see you both again.

Lucy & Jason Roberts

A wonderfully relaxing holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this charming, comfortable and well- equipped cottage. It was an ideal base for exploring this beautiful area. Lots to see and do - very helpful info about the area was provided. Our children (10 and 12) loved swimming, rowing on the lake and walking to the local bakery each morning. All in all we had a very relaxed and enjoyable holiday. We would highly recommend this accommodation.

Anita & David Baldy

We are safely home and back to work today, but we eased ourselves in gently and both worked from home!

You have a lovely piece of the Dordogne and without doubt, we (and Prince), would love to stay again.

Peter & Jeremy Merkli

We very much enjoyed ourselves again with you both. La Maison Jaune offered us a very comfortable stay as usual.

We particularly enjoyed our evening with you again. Thank you for the lovely meal which was delicious. We always look forward to seeing you both and to catch up. It is always nice to be able to have an interesting conversation with you both and very much appreciate your advice on the renovation works we would like to carry out. No doubt, we will have some more questions in the future.

We look forward to seeing you both again next year.

Dorne & Patrick Norman

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your lovely cottage, and had a fantastic meal at the hotel on Saturday evening, and to cap it Ruby was as good as gold in the restaurant.

Carolyn & John Gratton

Thank you we had a very enjoyable time, it was just what was needed. We have come           home feeling refreshed and eager to meet whatever is thrown at us - not a lot I hope! We thought the area absolutely beautiful and enjoyed the cooler clime.
Yes I am sure we will see you again.

Helen & Ian Cousins

We had a lovely stay and I think even Tilly is missing the garden and the opportunity of looking for her new friend.

Karin & Jason Banks

We had a lovely stay and will always remember our stay at La Maison Jaune with great fondness. Thank you for making us feel so welcome and being such lovely hosts.

 Peter & Iris Vandenberk
Thanks again for a lovely dinner, and for all the very relevant and practical advice during our stay: it definitely made our 2-week stay all the more enjoyable!

Jeremy& Peter Merkli
We very much enjoyed ourselves again.  La Maison Jaune offered us a very comfortable stay as usual, especially with the additions you have made. We are both not big TV people but enjoyed watching a film in the evening with Dad not 100% at the moment. It was a lovely surprise.

We particularly enjoyed our evening with you again. Thank you for the lovely meal and great company! We always look forward to seeing you both and catching up.

We look forward to seeing you both again next year.

A Wonderful 3 Weeks
La Maison Jaune, St Priest Les Fougeres, La Coquille, Dordogne, 24450, France

We returned for the 10th year to this gem of a location. The cottage was, as always immaculate, and we received the usual warm welcome from our hosts, Victor and Gaynor - who are more family than friends now. The weather couldn't have been better for the duration of our stay with clear blue skies and temperatures ranging from high 20s to mid 30s. The lake was wonderfully warm so many of our days were spent fishing, swimming and relaxing at lakeside - complete heaven.

This year my 80yr old Mum joined us for a week flying from Southampton and Limoges - she has sight problems so I had booked airport assistance for her at both ends - a fantastic free service with lovely staff accompanying her from check-in to the aircraft - definitely to be recommended for anyone with any mobility issues. Mum had a lovely, restful stay, mainly featuring eating, drinking and sleeping, but she now completely understands why we have waxed lyrical about our holidays at La Maison Jaune with Vic and Gaynor for 10 years!

Our 18yr old was delighted with this years addition of WiFi so was able to maintain contact with the 'real world' and on a lazy evening we did actually make use of the DVD player and watched one of the good selection of films available in the cottage.

We went to a fab restaurant, the St Jaques at St Saud, where we had a wonderful evening on the terrace overlooking the pretty garden - delicious food, every plate looking like a picture - dinner for 4 with wine drinks came to around £150 - very reasonable for what you get and a definite recommendation for a special night. For more simple food we went to La Provencal pizza restaurant in La Coquille - very tasty and only about £50. I also spent a lovely morning on horse back with Gillian in St Saud - she has a good selection of horses for riders of all ages and experience levels and I had a great time riding through the pretty countryside.

As always, top of our list of highlights were our evenings spent in the company of Vic, Gaynor and their family - the wine flows, the food is delicious, and the company is great - even the dog got dinner too! We cant thank them enough for making our holiday so special. St Priest and Victor and Gaynor hold a special place in our hearts. Now to plan next years visit . . . !

An amazing dog friendly gite in an idyllic setting

My husband, myself and our cockapoo Nelson spent the most amazing week in this beautiful gite in its idyllic setting. We had such a relaxing and memorable holiday that we have already booked again for next year, my husband and I have travelled a lot and rarely return to the same place but there is really something rather magical about swimming in your own private lake that has made us want to return! Gaynor and Vic were great hosts and We can't thank them enough for sharing their own beautiful part of France with us. The gite had everything you could need and was very well located to visit many of the sights in the Dordogne region. The gite is also within walking distance to the local bakers which was stocked with lots of tasty savoury and sweet treats! Nelson our cockapoo couldn't have been made to feel more welcome and even received some tasty treats of his own when we arrived. A lovely secure garden for him to run about in along with the breathe taking lake for him and us to swim in! Five stars all round for location, setting, facilities, dog friendlyness! And of course not forgetting Gaynor and Vic. Looking forward to returning again next year.

Laura & Peter Doree

Perfect, truly a wonderful place & so relaxing!

Recently stayed at this beautiful Gite with its very own private lake! The property was clean, everything we could ask for, a large enclosed garden for our 2 dogs too and then straight from the gate down to a beautiful lake to enjoy a stroll, swim and a picnic. From the start of planning our trip Gaynor gave us so much info and everything ran smoothly from arrival to the day we made our way back home. There is so much info on the surrounding area in the Gite and Gaynor is always at hand & happy to help with advice and places to visit, we were not lost for things to see, places to find and restaurants to eat in nearby towns. However having dinner with Gaynor and Victor is also as real treat and only a couple of minutes walk back to the Gite after a really relaxing evening or two - one was for my birthday and I was totally spoilt from morning til night. Can highly recommend Brantome and its lovely market, riverside bars and cafes. The Ex Police Rescue Home in Brantome is also well worth a visit. All areas, villages are beautiful. And best of all you really don't need to go far for early morning croissants, bread or a special cake, just a short walk from the Gite - perfect, ideal for supper too washed down with a lovely glass of wine. Would highly recommend and would love to re-visit.

Kim & Sean Rogers

Thanks for having us again this year – it was a really good break for us all.

Louise & Nick Pettingell

Following our 9th 2-week holiday at La Maison Jaune I find it difficult to find anything new to say about our stay as I have run out of superlatives in previous reviews but I will try! As always, a wonderfully warm welcome from Victor and Gaynor (even for our mad 18month old cocker spaniel), an immaculate, well equipped cottage with lovely personal touches and then 2 weeks of relaxing by the beautiful lake, fishing, swimming, rowing and soaking up the natural beauty and tranquillity. Our 17 year old daughter was joined for a few days by 3 friends and they had a great time together, including a fun night at the Pizza Restaurant in La Coquille, before flying home from Limoges to Southampton - a very easy trip. We had a rewarding trip to the weekly market in Piugeut Pluviers, a busy weekly market full of locals and visitors browsing a wide range of stalls - we particularly recommend the spit roasted chicken and quail as well as some very tasty cheese with fenugreek. Shopped out we then sat in the sun outside a café (who immediately provided a water bowl for the dog) and enjoyed a beer, chatted to friendly locals and watched the world go by. Another must for us every year is dinner on the pretty terrace at Le Voyageur in La Coquille - great friendly service, lovely presentation and tasty food. And then there are our lovely hosts, Victor and Gaynor , they are a big part in what keeps drawing us back. We spent several entertaining evenings in their company, at the fun village fete and around their welcoming dinner table. We were lucky enough to be invited to join them and their family for dinner. As always Victor donned the chefs apron and produced a delicious curry dinner - I am a definite curry convert - while Gaynor bustled about producing plates of starters, cheese and dessert and ensuring no glass was left empty for long - a very convivial evening all round. I'm sure it goes without saying - we love our time at La Maison Jaune and cant recommend it highly enough. We are hoping to squeeze in 3 weeks next year.

Tony & Tina Davies
We cannot thank you enough for your hospitality and for two very enjoyable meals.  I thought your lake was absolutely delightful and went round it with the dogs almost every day.
Ian & Clare Spencer
Many thanks for the great few days we had. I do think it did Clare a lot of good. Yours and Victors hospitality was second to none. We hope to come back in the future.

Martin Stegu

…………….and we often talk about our wonderful two weeks in La Maison jaune!
It was such an incredible place … the wonderful view … the private lake … the house itself with so much atmosphere.  Thank you so much for your hospitality and your quasi-permanent assistance!

Gemma & Kevin Stephen

Homely, fabulous views, excellent hosts. After a hideous start to the holiday with delays and money going missing it was a relief that the cottage and the owners were so welcoming. The cottage is homely and well equipped with everything we need to cook at home. The cottage was clean and had some special treats waiting for us, the kids and the dogs (that went down well). The garden was perfect for both dogs and kids and I spent days admiring the beautiful views which fell just beyond the garden gate. In fact, our daughter spent many hours outside finding grasshoppers and crickets. The lake was beautiful and secluded. One dog loved to chase the abundance of frogs and other wildlife in the reeds whilst the other flew himself off the pontoon after his ball. The kids spent their time swimming, on the boat or trying to catch fish and frogs in the tyres that hung from the pontoon. We visited many places of which we would recommend After a hideous start to the holiday with delays and money going missing it was a for anyone with children and/or dogs.

  1. Les grottes du roc du gazelle and les roc cristophe- both about an hour away so visit on the same day and take a picnic.
  2. Buziere la grand- free to enter- artificial beach that surrounds a lake. Walking and climbing available and well worth paying for.
  3. Ruffiac - as above but further away. Long walk around lake and wake boarding available with smaller section for first timers and children age 8 and up.
  4. Jumihac le grande- chateau- lovely walk near here, ask Gaynor to give directions.
  5. Brantome- truly beautiful. We took the kids and dogs canoeing (be sure to book) and spent the afternoon looking at the street fayre and the kids swimming in the river.
  6. Riding stables near Jumihac- daughter went out on a hack, absolutely loved it. She even got to brush etc and it wasn't taken out of her hours ride :-).
  7. Lake near national park- had a nice picnic and walk here (ask Gaynor ).
  8. If you like bike riding then take your own bikes we went on two which the dogs and kids loved. Chalis - vole vertex approx 14 miles and Thivers approx 24 miles (askll slept well that evening)
  9. Food can't be missed- pizza in Thivers - pizza van parked just before carrefour on way back to cottage. All freshly made and amazing!!

All in all, wonderful family holiday. Dogs were not happy to come home and live their mundane life near the beach when they had sunbathed, chased frogs, dived off pontoons and had the ball thrown from dawn until dusk. Oh and Gaynor and Victor were amazing too!! We will go back

Peter & Jeremy Merkli

We had a fantastic time as usual and the weather was particularly good to us this time. Thank you again for your hospitality and lovely welcome. We of course would like to come again next year for the usual two first weeks in September if that is possible.

There is still so much more to see and explore which we look forward in hopefully doing next year again.

'It's a superb location, tranquil with stunning views and lovely accommodation. The children loved the lake, swimming and fishing and messing about in the boat.' Jemima Lawrence. 'We had a wonderful week. Just what my wife and I needed. A rest, peace and tranquillity. The accommodation was very comfortable and I really enjoyed fishing again, something I haven't done for years. A Creed. 'The cottage was a total surprise to us, so attractive, inviting, and very tastefully decorated.

For the family, all city dwellers, the panoramic view of the countryside and peaceful environment has been so recuperative.' A great holiday away from it all'.

Rachael S. Perfect Holiday Home! 5 out of 5

We spent a week at La Maison Jaune at the end of October this year and our holiday could not have been better! La Maison Jaune is more beautiful than in the photos, superbly located and extremely comfortable and well-equipped. It was also lovely and warm,
not always the case when you rent holiday properties "out of season". The setting was idyllic and our teenage girls loved the lake, the walks (with the dog!), the rowing boat and the fishing.

Gaynor and Vic were superb hosts and were so willing to spend time teaching sailing/fishing at the lake and sharing information about this beautiful region. If you are looking for a property that the whole family can enjoy (including the grandparents and the pets!) you will find nowhere better. La Maison Jaune offered us exactly what we were looking for - complete tranquility, warm and comfortable accommodation and an absolutely stunning location. Thank you Gaynor and Vic.

Louise P from Surrey Lovely Hideaway 5 out of 5

We are recently back from our 5th 2-week holiday at Maison Jaune in as many years and once again are full of superlatives. The friendly village setting; the charming, welcoming hosts; the spotless, well equipped gite; the lovely, tranquil lake - all the ingredients we need for a perfect, relaxing holiday. Of all these benefits, for us, Victor and Gaynor and their freshwater lake are the magic ingredients that keep drawing us back to this pretty area.

Venturing away from the gite we always enjoy trips to nearby St Yriex, Brantome and, slightly further afield, to Perigueux - all worth a visit, espeically on market days. There is so much to do in the area that each year we discover something new, this year we hired canoes at Corgnac sur L'Isle (a 20 min drive from the gite) and spent a peaceful afternoon canoeing down the river, a lovely way to see the countryside and wildlife - we saw ducks, herons, kingfishers and red squirrels. We eagerly await our next trip and can not recommend it highly enough.

Carol M Great location 5 out of 5

Upon arriving at la Maison Jaune, we were very impressed with the house, much prettier in real life. It was well equipped and absolutely spotless. We had great fun at the lake with our dog and went out in the boat a few times. Being a non swimmer, I was delighted that life jackets were available. The location was great to easily access lots of tourist attractions and Gaynor and Victor provided a well advised information pack and they were always available to answer any queries we may have had. In the village, there was a great bakery/ store and in nearby La Coquille, there was a great carrefour supermarket. we also had a really lovely stay in the b&b towards the end of our holiday and we were absolutely made to feel that we were part of the family. Victor is a great
cook. We will definitely return.

Paul S. Australia Delightful 5 out of 5

Our family of five had a delightful week here. The location is excellent (not touristy but near many fascinating sights). The cottage itself is quaint but very comfortable and we loved the lake. It is possible to take some very pleasant walks from the front door. Gaynor and Victor are terrific hosts (we had a marvellous - and bargain-priced - dinner at their B and B the first night) and the cottage is full of thoughtful touches (wine and beer in the fridge; washing powder, dishwashing tablets) not often found in other properties we have stayed in. We have no reservations at all and recommend without reservation.

Bramal, Glasgow Return to La Maison Jaune 5 out of 5

We were so happy with this gite last year that for the first time in coming to France for 20 year we returned and realised very quickly that it wasn't a mistake to come back. Vic and Gaynor were as always great hosts and keen that we had the best time whether sightseeing or enjoying the facilities at the lake. Our sons 22 and 14 had a super time fishing and sailing thanks to Vic's patience for teaching them.We had great weather so altogether a lovely time.

Kate, Hampshire A little haven of tranquillity. 5 out of 5

La Maison Jaune is the ideal place to escape the stresses of everyday life. The cottage is in an incredibly peaceful setting and I found it difficult to tear myself away from the beautiful lake, despite the many choices of interesting places to visit.

When I did venture out, I discovered stunning countryside, quiet meandering roads wild woodland and appealing local markets. I was excited to have the opportunity to watch red squirrels, deer, kingfisher, birds of prey hovering in the sunshine and a myriad of other wildlife. Within easy travelling distance there was so much to explore from prehistoric caves to picturesque medieval towns.

The cottage is well equipped, the village shops well stocked and the local people welcome visitors in a helpful, friendly manner In particular, the bakery/ patisserie was a constant temptation! Gaynor and Vic are wonderful, generous, yet unobtrusive hosts and have managed to provide a perfect holiday experience without compromise to a beautiful environment. Having arrived with my mind firmly fixed on the mountain of work I had left behind , the tranquillity of La Maison Jaune and its surroundings worked its magic and I left with an enormous sense of inner calm and wellbeing. I have already booked to return later this year!

O'Connor, Derbyshire Excellent Gite, 5 out of 5

We had an excellent week at Gaynor and Victor's Gite-glorious sunshine every day! . My brother's family joined us for two days and had a wonderful time too! The cottage itself is gorgeous. An extremely high spec gite with every possible thing you could need including a dishwasher! And both a BBQ at the house and the lake! The lovely Main bedroom is ensuite with an additional good sized family bathroom and an adjoining set of bedrooms ( 2x bunks in one room and a set of twin beds in the adjoining room -all beautifully decorated and presented) and all rooms are off the main living/dining area. A welcome pack awaits guests too. The private lake is a real treat for swimmers, those who fish, sail, or just like to mess about on the boats and lake-side. Our labrador had a wonderful holiday too, the open space, off lead, the walks to and around the lake and village. Clear skies at night enabled us to see millions of stars, some of the constellations and watch satellites and the odd shooting star!! There are lots of places to explore locally as well as a little further afield. Locally there is a nature reserve/park next to a Buddhist Monastry with wonderful walks for all levels of walkers and it is a short drive to Brantome (the Venice of the Dordogne),
For peace, tranquility, private lake (!) a quiet village setting (the best bread and cakes we have had in France -the baker is very very good), hosts nearby who are both unobtrusive and very welcoming and hospitable - and proximity to lots of other locations and holiday activities - what more could you ask for?

Louise P. Surrey . A Perfect Getaway 5 out of 5

We have holidayed in the Dordogne area for more than 10 years, always opting for a house with a pool until 3 years ago when we discovered the delights of La Maison Jaune and its private lake. We have just returned from our third visit and have had another fabulous, relaxing holiday in this lovely, natural haven. As always we received a wonderfully warm welcome from our hosts, Victor and Gaynor (who feel like members of our extended family) our well-equipped pretty cottage was immaculate.

The weather was fantastic - clear blue skies and temperatures up around 30 every day meant we didnt venture too far from the lovely clear, warm waters of the lake on most days, where we made full use of the fishing, swimming, rowing and sailing boats or just sat relaxing in this lovely natural environment before enjoying the evening sunshine with a barbeque by the lake watching the sun go down - Heavenly! Who needs a swimming pool when you can have all that!

The village shop is a must for bread and breakfast and holds a stock of other essentials. La Coquille (5 min drive) has a range of other shops including a small Shopi supermarket for everying else you need and a lovely hotel/restaurant, Les Voyageurs, where we had a delicious dinner on the pretty terrace (the assiette gourmand for dessert is highly recommended by our 11 year old daughter!)

The area has something for everyone - its packed with pretty villages, towns and chateaux as well as some lovely countryside, and for the more active go-karting, canoeing and tree climbing are within easy reach. We have found our little bit of paradise and can not recommend it highly enough - we have been home 2 days and are already looking forward to our next visit!

G S Bothwell You'll love this. 5 out of 5

This is one of the best Gite type properties we have stayed in during 20 years coming to France. We were initially looking for a property in Dordogne with a pool but these are all very expensive and we chanced on la Maison Jaune in holiday-rentals. Although the convenience of a chlorinated pool within a few yards of a holiday property may be what you have been used to in the past, having access to what in essentally your own private lake takes a lot of beating. We went with two young teenage boys and they spent loads of time swimming and messing around in the water. Victor our host taught them the rudiments of fishing and they were able to escape from the adults and would take themselves away fishing in the evening.

The lake is part of a series of manmade lakes in a line down a small valley on the side of the hill on which St Priest les Fougers sits. It is about 200 meters from the back of the property down a hill and is free flowing and reasonably clear and fresh. Victor has stocked it with some perch and carp and will give you rods with which to try your luck. There is also a small boat and a Mirror dinghy which is just great for learning the basics of sailing.

La Maison Jaune is on the edge of the village and is two minutes walking distance of the small baker and general store. The village itself is on the northern border of Dordogne but within easy striking distance of the major sites of interest. We flew from Limoges and were at the gite within 45 minutes. Our hosts Victor and Gaynor had prepared us lovely evening meal. Their own house is a short distance from the gite and they go for a swim /walk most evenings and are a great source of local knowledge and advice. The gite itself is are well equiped from both French and British standards. We were given a welcome pack but on the drive from the airport there a several good supermarkets for the first stock up. We were taken enough with the setup to have booked it for next year.

The weather has been awful here in Bristol and we are all wishing we were back with you!

We loved staying in your cottage and had a great holiday. Thank you.

What better recommendation can I give than to say that this year we returned to St Priest for the 8th year and as always, had a fantastic holiday. As always we received a wonderfully warm welcome from Victor and Gaynor and the cottage was spotless and provides everything you need, and the lake is a natural paradise, perfect for swimming and fishing or just chilling in the sun with a book chosen from the wide selection in the cottage. When we could tear ourselves away from the lake we ventured out to lovely local towns and villages, often on market days and would recommend Brantome and Piegut-Pluviers for a good mix of tasty treats, local colour and gift ideas. This year we took our very busy 7th month old working cocker spaniel too - a dog with limitless energy. She had a lovely time exploring the lake and its environment and slept soundly every night. Having never travelled with a dog before we were slightly anxious about the official hoops you have to jump through prior to returning to the UK but Gaynor recommended a lovely local vet who took care of everything and it all went without a hitch. Also new to us this year was the revelation that is Limoges Airport. Our teenage daughter had 2 friends fly down to join us for a few days. They had a great time with us, particularly enjoying the village fete weekend and the lake, after which the 3 girls flew home together to collect GCSE results. Flights were with Flybe between Southampton and Limoges, both airports being easily accessible and reassuringly small, friendly and easy find your way through and only four hours door to door - our daughter has declared that she will be flying next year!

Clare & Paul Leeming- August 2014

We arrived home safely on Saturday - I just wanted to say thank you so much for a lovely stay at your gite, we had a fantastic time (and it was a bonus that my brother and nieces managed to visit). We particularly enjoyed our first evening (I cooked duck breasts in plum sauce last night in memory of it!)………….

Jeremy & Peter Merkli – September 2014

The dogs are fine - very tired and fast to sleep now after a good walk today.

We enjoyed our break very much and were very fortunate with the weather. Missing it all already!

Thank you again for your lovely hospitality and look forward to seeing you both next year again………………………..
